I believe that Art is the link to all forces and functions of life. Art provides an opportunity for vast emotional, intellectual and social experiences. It is a learning resource and can be incorporated into all other subjects in the school curriculum for a necessary, well rounded education. Therefore, it is my conviction that Art plays a significant role in the educational process of the 21st Century learner.
Emotionally, Art promotes the self image, develops self confidence along with self awareness, by means of successful achievement and satisfaction in producing works of art. It establishes a positive attitude towards life and is responsible for motivating a student to want to continue to learn throughout their life.
Intellectually, Art is a vehicle for learning. It encourages exploration, inventiveness and problem solving. Art also helps to develop fundamental skills through the manipulation of concrete materials, with the introduction of various processes, techniques and procedures. Each and every student possesses individual potential which must be developed.
Socially, Art provides opportunities to work with one another. It encompasses every aspect of human life. It enhances the world around us. It is the universal form of communication, a means of reaching and transferring information. It is important develop an awareness that Art is an integral part of our past culture, our immediate environment and our future.
This future should rest upon a well rounded individual with the capabilities to deal with the changing society. Leonard Bernstein once said, “Only the arts can turn the not yet into reality.” We must help develop students into skillful purposeful and independent people who can maintain their own life and reach their highest potential. Any subject in and of itself should not be more valuable than another, especially when remembering it is our educational duty to teach the “whole child”. Consequently, Art must be an essential element, a Core class, in the education for all children every year and be taught by a trained, skilled and professional educator.
